A pet lover’s Hierarchy of Needs - Woof Blanktes

In 1943, American psychologist Abraham Maslow came up with his now famous hierarchy of needs.

In it he introduced the concept that human beings have certain needs that must be met in order for us to function as we have been designed to.

Any pet owner or lover will know that this principle applies to our furry, feathered, amphibious, reptilian, aquatic and invertebrate friends as well!

The most basic set of needs that Maslow identified can be summarised as physiological and include the need for shelter. As warm blooded mammals living in a sometimes cold world, we humans need to clothe ourselves, provide homes for ourselves and furnishings within those homes to keep as warm, comfortable and cosy!

And for the furry friends so many of us share these homes with, this need for shelter, warmth, comfort and cosiness also applies!

At the most basic level, the dogs, cats, rabbits, mice, rats, chinchillas and chipmunks (to name but a few!) that so many of us love sharing our lives with, need a basic structure in which they can shelter, sleep and just plain relax. For some this will be the physical houses which we also use to meet these needs of protection, rest and comfort; for others it may be a purpose built structure outside of our homes such as a kennel or hutch.

Beyond the basic structure, there is the need to provide suitable 

Bedding. Within our homes we have cushions, quilts, blankets and pillows which provide an additional level of warmth, comfort and protection to that provided by the stone, wood, brick (other materials are also available!) homes that we live in.
